How to Clean Athletic Uniforms

Whether your child is involved in peewee athletics or playing high school ball, getting their uniform clean can seem like quite a chore. While your child may not mind, you and the coach probably care.

As soon as you can wrestle the uniform away from the child, start the process of getting it clean. Nothing in the world smells worse than opening a gym bag after a uniform has been sitting in it all week.

Start by inspecting the uniform for any stains. The most common stain on athletic uniforms is grass. If you find any grass stains, then combine a one-half cup of sugar with enough water to make a paste. Rub the paste onto the stain. Then, use an old toothbrush to scrub the stain. After you have it scrubbed, let it soak for 30 minutes.

You may also find dirt and red clay stains on the uniform. Start by scraping as much of the dirt or clay off the uniform as possible with an old credit card. Then, combine a mixture of one cup white vinegar and three tablespoons salt in a bowl big enough to hold the uniform. Submerge the uniform and let it sit for 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water and repeat as necessary.

Ideally, your child will have treated any blood stains as soon as they happen, but that is highly unlikely. If there is dry blood on the uniform, then fill a large bowl with cold water. Lay the uniform in the cold water so that the stain is facing up. Generously sprinkle the stain with meat tenderizer and push the stain down into the water. The meat tenderizer will break down the enzymes in the blood.

After you have pretreated the uniform, then make sure that you wash it at the laundromat as soon as possible. To remove the horrible smell that all uniforms seem to have, pour one-half cup of ammonia mixed with one-half cup of water into the first rinse cycle or put it in the bleach dispenser.

You will look like a super mom or dad when your child shows up at the next game in their sparkling uniform. While they may not say thanks now, they will appreciate it deep down inside. When they grow up, then they may very well come back and tell you thanks. Meanwhile, you are building memories that are priceless.
